A drawing of a male nude, half length; turned to the front, with outspread arms. This is a study for the figure of Apollo in The Transformation of Cyparissus, a fresco once in the Villa Aldobrandini, Frascati.
The Villa Aldobrandini was rebuilt by Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini in the early seventeenth century. Aldobrandini commissioned Domenichino to produce a cycle of ten frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Apollo for a large pavilion in the grounds of the palace. Eight of the ten frescoes were transferred to canvas and are are now in the National Gallery, London (NG 6284-6291). The original removal of Transformation of Cyparissus from the walls of the villa was not entirely successful and the portion containing the figure of Apollo remains at Frascati.
For drawings related to the complete cycle, see JPH 1097–1124. For further on the commission see JPH 1097.Provenance
Bequeathed to Francesco Raspantino; Carlo Maratti, after 1664; from whom purchased by Clement XI, 1703; by whom bequeathed to his nephew, Alessandro Albani, 1721; from whom purchased by George III, 1762
