A drawing of the head of a child, turned half to the left, craning forwards and with the eyes turned upwards. This is a cartoon for the head of the putto below the knees of the Virgin in The Virgin intercedes with Christ on behalf of the City of Naples, one of the frescoes in the pendentives in the Cappella del Tesoro in the Duomo, Naples. The drawing has been squared for transfer.
Domenichino painted four frescoes in the pendentives of the Cappella del Tesoro, in the Duomo in Naples. To the left of the entrance: The Virgin intercedes with Christ on behalf of the city of Naples. To the right of the entrance: San Gennaro intercedes with Christ on behalf of the city of Naples. On the left of the high altar: S. Gennaro is recieved by Christ. On the right of the high altar: S. Gennaro as Protector of the city of Naples.
Payments were made for The Virgin intercedes with Christ on behalf of the city of Naples and S. Gennaro as Protector of the city of Naples respectively on 25th November 1633, and 27th July 1635. In style the pendentive of S. Gennaro is recieved by Christ clearly belongs to the last years of Domenichino's activity in Naples prior to his death in 1641.Provenance
