Arch-shaped top, surmounted in the centre with a carved gilt eagle with wings outstretched, and at each corner by a carved gilt seated female figure. Upper part with two panelled doors enclosing three groups of drawers and pigeon holes, gilt and japanned in red; centre of interior has a smaller pair of doors enclosing several small drawers and pigeon holes decorated in contrasting black japanning. Lower part in form of bureau with slanted baize-lined flap, enclosing small drawers and pigeon holes, above three groups of graduated drawers, outer concave flanking inner flat-fronted drawer. Standing on a carved gilt animal heads at each of the four corners, with a smaller head in the centre-front.
Provenance
This cabinet was purchased in 1932 by Queen Mary from Frank Partridge & Sons for £750. It was formerly the property of the politician Robert Hanbury (1845-1903) and in 1925 was located in the Music Room at Ilam Hall. It was previously believed to have been German and made c.1690, but more recent analysis shows it is more likely to be of Italian manufacture, made in the early eighteenth century.
