After a work attributed to Fra Bartolomeo (1475-1517)
A landscape with ruins and a fortified town c.1853-1876
-
A photograph of a drawing attributed to Fra Bartolomeo depicting a landscape with ruins and a fortified town now in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm (inv. no. NMH 284/1863). Annotated on the verso.
Traditionally attributed to Raphael, in 1917 this drawing was connected with Fra Bartolomeo and his workshop. In 1990 it was discovered that this drawing is preparatory for an anonymous miniature depicting the Holy Family (now in the Vatican Library) and that the landscape is very similar to that in a number of fifteenth and sixteenth century paintings executed by different artists. The attribution of this drawing has been therefore disputed by scholars (see Bibliographic References for further discussion).Provenance
Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
