Antoine Pierre Charles Favart (1784-1867)
A putto dated 1818
-
An etching in reverse after a drawing depicting a putto supporting a shield and olive branch now in the Albertina Museum, Vienna (inv. no. 213), where it is catalogued as by Raphael and dated c.1518-1520. According to Ruland (1876), this print was published as plate n.3 by Antoine Pierre Charles Favart in 1818. This print is lettered with the name of Raphael and the monogram of the printmaker. Dated 1818. Annotated on the verso.
A number of scholars debated the attribution of this drawing, which has been traditionally referred to Raphael. Gianfrancesco Penni and Giulio Romano have also been suggested. This drawing seems to have been part of a larger drawing showing a decorative depiction (see Bibliographic References).Provenance
