Ferdinando Cristofani (fl. c. 1839-1847)
The Marriage of the Virgin ['The Sposalizio'] c.1838-1848
-
An outline etching by Ferdinando Cristofani reproducing a drawing by Vincenzo Nocchi which is a copy after the so-called "Sposalizio", painted by Raphael in 1504, now in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan (inv. no. 472). The print is lettered in Italian with the name of Raphael, the location of the painting and production details. The print was originally on the same sheet as a print of the Crucifixion by Raphael. Annotated on the verso. See RCINs 851385-851391 for prints and photographs of 'The Sposalizio'.
The painting of the Marriage of the Virgin was commissioned by Filippo degli Albezzini for a chapel in the church of San Francesco, Cittá di Castello, where now instead hangs a copy of the original painting. The raised temple in the background of the painting has sixteen sides and is surrounded on the ground floor by a portico with Ionic columns and round arches. On the architrave, above the arches, is the artist's signature and date.Provenance
