A photograph of the recto of a drawing now in the Louvre (inv.no.780) copying elements of the decoration of the pilasters between the third and fourth and fourth and fifth bays of the Loggia designed by Raphael and executed by his workshop (c.1517-19) in the Vatican. For a photograph of the verso of this drawing, which contains copies after another pilaster, see RCIN 853727. Annotated on verso.
The drawing was catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being in the collection of Édouard Gatteaux in Paris and it bears his collector's stamp (Lugt 852). A fire at the Gatteaux house in 1871 destroyed a significant portion of the collection, but this drawing survived.
The repeating sequence of decoration in the Logge - see Dacos 2008 (Bibliographic References) for more information - is strongly influenced by the antique; Raphael had studied antique sculpture and painting in Rome.Provenance
