An etching by Pietro Santi Bartoli reproducing, in reverse, the almost entirely destroyed fresco Bathsheba interceding with David on behalf of Solomon painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the eleventh bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Lettered with a Bible quote (Genesis 27). Signed by Bartoli and numbered at lower right: 11. Trimmed within platemark. Published in Imagines veteris ac novi Testamenti in Vaticani Palatii (1675).
According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.Provenance
