An etching by Pietro Santi Bartoli reproducing, in reverse, the almost entirely destroyed fresco Jacob wrestles with the angel painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the sixth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Lettered with Bible quote in Latin (Genesis 30) and with attribution of the composition to Raphael. Signed by Bartoli at lower left and numbered on plate at lower right: 6. Published in Imagines veteris ac novi Testamenti in Vaticani Palatii (1675).
According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.Provenance
