An etching by Pietro Santi Bartoli reproducing, in reverse, the almost entirely destroyed fresco The sacrifice of Cain and Abel painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the basamento of the second bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Lettered with Bible quote in Latin (Genesis 4). Numbered, in reverse, on plate at lower right: 2. Annotated below this in ink: 2. Trimmed within platemark. Published in Imagines veteris ac novi Testamenti in Vaticani Palatii (1675).
According to Dacos (see Bibliographic References), the basamento paintings of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican were executed in grisaille and imitated bronze reliefs.Provenance
