Anton Maria Zanetti the Elder (1680-1767)
God appears to Isaac dated 1723
-
A chiaroscuro woodcut reproducing, in reverse, a design by Raphael for the fresco God appears to Isaac painted by the workshop of Raphael (c.1517-19) in the vault of the fourth bay of the Raphael Loggia in the Vatican. Inscribed along bottom: Ex Raphaelis Urbinatis Scheda, quae in Ædibus labachÿs / extat unus et alter Antonius Ma Zanetti delin et Sculps. Backed onto another sheet of paper, which is watermarked (not in Briquet). For another impression of this woodcut, see RCIN 853436. Not in Ruland (1876).
Zanetti revived the chiaroscuro woodcut, a prevalent technique of sixteenth-century Italian printmaking. Zanetti published a collection of chiaroscuro woodcuts, primarily after works by Parmigianino, but also including some after Raphael, in the late 1720s under the title Diversarum Iconum and again in a third edition of 1749 with the title 'Raccolta di varie stampe...'. See RCINs 853407, 853429, 853436, 853457, 853471 and 853531 for other chiaroscuro woodcuts by Zanetti after Loggia frescoes.
Höper (2001) cites the drawing now in the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart (see RCIN 853440 for a photograph), as that used by Zanetti for his engraving.Provenance
