-
A print based upon Raphael's tapestry cartoon of The Miraculous Draught of Fishes; in reverse and with slight alterations. Lettered with inscription attributing the composition to Raphael, and signed with engraver's monogram on a stone at lower right (see Nagler II, no.498.1). Not in Ruland (1876).
Raphael's cartoon of The Miraculous Draught of Fishes is one from a set of ten depicting episodes from the lives of St Peter and St Paul, commissioned from Raphael by Pope Leo X for tapestries to be hung in the Sistine Chapel. Seven of the cartoons survive in the Victoria and Albert Museum, on loan from the Royal Collection; the ten original tapestries were woven in the Brussels workshop of Pieter van Aelst and are currently housed in the Vatican Museums.Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (after 1876)
