Paolo Fidanza (b. 1731)
Master: Set of twenty-four heads from the 'Parnassus' Item: Head of Dante [from 'The Disputa'] c.1757-85
-
A print reproducing the head of Dante, standing in the lower right corner of the fresco of the Disputa (The Disputation of the Holy Sacrament), painted by Raphael in the Stanza della Segnatura, Vatican. Lettered along the lower margin. Numbered at upper right: IX. The legend below the image erroneously states that the figure - rightly identified as Dante (c.1265-1321) - is taken from Raphael's fresco of Parnassus, also in the Stanza della Segnatura. Probably from Tetes choisies de personnages illustres... published by Paolo Fidanza in Rome in 1785.
Paolo Fidanza became famous for publishing six volumes of prints of heads after Raphael between 1757 and 1763.Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
