A sacrifice in the temple of Jupiter published 1803
-
An etching depicting a sacrifice in the temple of Jupiter. This print reproduces in reverse a drawing by Giulio Romano now in the Louvre, Paris (Inv. No. 3528). This print is lettered with "467" at the upper right corner, the title in French, German and English at the bottom of the print and the identification of Raphael as the painter of the fresco. Signed by the printmaker. This print was published as plate 467 in C.P. Landon, Vie et Œuvre complète de Raphaël Sanzio, 1803. Trimmed within the platemark. Annotated on the verso.
This drawing is a study for the scene depicted in the lunette of the east wall of the loggia of the Giardino Segreto apartment, in Palazzo Te, Mantua. In the fresco (c.1531-4), the scene is extended, conveying a much more airy feeling.Provenance
