An etching with engraving by Angelo Guelmi depicting a sacrifice in the temple of Jupiter. This print is after a drawing by Giulio Romano in the Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 3528). This print is lettered with the title, the plate number "IV" and the identification of Giulio Romano as the painter. Signed by the printmaker and published in Pitture di Giulio Romano che si osservano eseguite a fresco nel Reale Palazzo del Te fuori di Mantova. Delineate, Incise e Corredate delle Opportune illustrazioni (first edition 1811). Annotated on the verso. On watermarked paper.
This drawing is a study for the scene depicted in the lunette of the east wall of the loggia of the Giardino Segreto apartment, in Palazzo Te, Mantua. In the fresco (c.1531-4), the scene is extended, conveying a much more airy feeling.Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
