After a work attributed to Raphael (1483-1520)
The Morbetto c.1853-76
-
A photograph of a drawing currently in the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. no.525E). The authorship of the drawing is an ongoing matter of dispute, with some scholars ascribing it to Raphael (Ferino Pagden 1984, Clayton 1999) and others to his workshop.
The drawing corresponds closely with Marcantonio's engraving of this subject (a second state impression of which can be found at RCIN 852188), and is aknowledged as the modello upon which the engraving was based, in reverse. Another drawing, unanimously given to Raphael (c.1512) and currently in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle (RCIN 990117), is related to the composition, although it may not have been made expressly for the engraving.
