Portrait of Pope Julius II c.1824-76
-
A print after the Portrait of Pope Julius II, a painting by Raphael (c.1511) now in the National Gallery, London (inv. NG 27). Lettered with title and production details. Plate 62.
The painting, formerly in the Angerstein Collection, entered the National Gallery in 1824, terminus post quem for the execution of this print which was published when the painting was already property of the National Gallery (see lettering below image).
The composition is known through several painted and engraved copies. Ruland (1876) followed Passavant’s opinion (1860) and regarded a painting in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence (inv.1912, no.79) as the original by Raphael. That painting is now unanimously accepted as a copy by Titian after Raphael’s original portrait now commonly identified with the painting hanging in the London National Gallery.Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
