After a work copying Raphael (1483-1520)
Portrait of Pope Julius II c.1853-76
-
A photograph of one of the several existing copies of the Portrait of Pope Julius II, the original version of which was made by Raphael in c.1511 and is now in the National Gallery, London (inv. NG 27).
According to Ruland (1876), this photograph reproduces a painting housed in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence (inv.1912, no.79), which he regarded as the original by Raphael following an opinion first expressed by Passavant (1860). That painting is now unanimously accepted as a copy by Titian after Raphael’s original portrait now commonly identified with the painting hanging in the London National GalleryProvenance
Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
