After a work attributed to Raphael (1483-1520)
Self-Portrait of Raphael c.1680-1820
-
A print after a painting generally attributed to Raphael now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv.1890, no.1706). Without letters. Annotated in pencil. Not in Ruland (1876).
The sitter has always been identified with Raphael, but the author of the painting is still debated. Some scholars consider it a copy after Raphael's self-portrait in his School of Athens fresco, whereas others regard it as an autograph self-portrait painted by Raphael himself. The dating of the painting is also a matter of dispute, with suggestions ranging from 1505 to 1509.Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (after 1876)
