Marco Dente Da Ravenna (1486-1527)
Fortitude c.1515-20
-
An engraving after a design the authorship of which is unclear. According to Bartsch, the engraving may be after a drawing by Raphael or Giulio Romano; Ruland (1876) catalogued it as after an idea by Raphael. Signed with engraver's monogram in the margin.
A drawing of this subject currently in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (inv. no. A*78) corresponds closely to the engraving (although in reverse). Its attribution is a matter of dispute, with some scholars ascribing it to Tommaso Vincidor (Dacos 1980), others to G.F. Penni (Oberhuber 1972) and more recently to Raphael himself (Gnann in Oberhuber/Gnann 1999). For a discussion on the subject matter and relationship between the Teyler drawing and the engraving, see Bibliographic References.Provenance
