A photograph of a painting catalogued by Ruland (1876) as 'ascribed to Raphael', then owned by Mr H. Hope.
According to Passavant, a drawing formerly in the collection of Professor Jansen at Copenhagen (which he attributed to G.F. Penni) is the original study for the painting. In the Royal Library at Windsor Castle survives a very similar drawing (RCIN 990415), which (still according to Passavant) is a copy of the study formerly in the Jansen Collection.
Details of the photography of the painting by Cundall are found in the Raphael Collection correspondence (RA VIC/ADDA10/85/65, RA VIC/ADDA10/85/69, RA VIC/ADDA10/85/72, VIC/ADDA10/85/75a, RA VIC/ADDA10/85/77, RA VIC/ADDA10/85/79, RA VIC/ADDA10/85/81, RA VIC/ADDA10/85/94 and RA VIC/ADDA10/85/98).Provenance
Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1859)
