Agostino dei Musi (c. 1490-after 1536)
Hercules and Antaeus c.1520-30
-
An engraving corresponding closely to a print by Marcantonio Raimondi (RCIN 851837), of which is thought to be a copy. First state. Signed with engraver's monogram on tablet at lower left: A.V. Stamped with the collectors' marks of W. H. F. K. Graf von Lepell (Lugt 1672) and Kupferstichkabinett, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (Lugt 1606 and 2398) on the back. This engraving was not included in Ruland's Raphael Collection catalogue (1876).
The authorship of the design is disputed, with some scholars supporting the traditional attribution to Raphael (Oberhuber/Gnann 1999, pp.110-11), and others suggesting a derivation from a drawing by Giulio Romano (Raphael Invenit 1985, p.248, VII.1).
A 2nd Century BC sculpture of Hercules and Antaeus, previously in the Vatican Belvedere and now in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence (inv. Pitti, OdA, 1911, n. 607), is commonly believed to have been the source for the figures in the engraving (Shoemaker/Broun 1981, no.51).Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (after 1876)
