Saint Michael Vanquishing Satan c.1840
-
An engraving after a now lost design by Raphael for the painting of Saint Michael Vanquishing Satan (1518) currently in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.610). The painting - which is generally attributed to Raphael and his workshop - differs from the engraving in several details, which therefore seems to document an earlier thought. Composition attributed to Raphael and signed on plate at lower left: RAP. VR. INV / N.B.L. A photograph of the painting at RCIN 851489.
Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
