The Virgin and Child after 1853
Salted paper print | 28.9 x 21.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851120
-
A photograph of a tracing executed by Passavant from a painting listed by Ruland (1876) as being then in the possession of the Countess Lucia Fabrizi, Terni (probably ex-collection Countess Anna Alfani, Perugia). Not included in Ruland’s Raphael Collection catalogue (1876).
An original panel by Perugino of this composition is believed to have existed and has been variously identified with one of the several extant versions. The composition corresponds closely to the central motif of the Virgin and Child in the Decemviri Altarpiece, a work by Perugino now in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, Vatican City (inv. no.224).
Showing the seated Virgin supporting the Christ Child with both hands, who stands on her lap and clutches at her bodice, with winged cherub heads on either side.Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (after 1876)
