After a work copying The Workshop of Raphael
Holy Family with Saints c.1800-1876
-
A lithograph after a painting which, according to the legend below the image, was then in Vienna (?) and thought to be by Raphael.
The composition is based on the so-called Holy Family of Francis I, a painting attributed to Raphael and his workshop (1518) now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.604). In the composition reproduced in this lithograph, the angels have been eliminated and the figure of St Elizabeth has been replaced by that of a female saint (St Catherine of Alexandria?) holding the right arm of the Infant Baptist. A photograph of the Holy Family of Francis I can be found at RCIN 851028.
Showing the full-length Virgin supporting the Christ Child stepping out of His cradle; with St Joseph behind her on the right, and St Catherine of Alexandria with the Infant Baptist standing on the left.Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
