Bernard Picart (1673-1733)
Head of a woman published 1734
-
An etching reproducing a drawing then in the Vilenbrock Collection, Amsterdam and now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3950). Lettered with attribution of the drawing to Raphael. Published in B. Picart, Impostures Innocentes, Amsterdam, 1734, plate 7.
The Louvre drawing is presumably a copy after a lost drawing by Giulio Romano connected with the figure of the Virgin in the so-called La Perla, a painting now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. no.301) generally attributed to Giulio (c.1518-19), possibly after a design by Raphael. For a photograph of the painting, see RCIN 851004.
Showing the head and shoulders of a woman, with cloth wrapped around her hair, looking down to the left.Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
