A print after a painting attributed on plate to Raphael, catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the collection of the King of the Netherlands. Lettered with title and production details.
The painting was formerly in the collection of Lucien Bonaparte, Rome. An etching after it, published in Choix de gravures à l'eau forte, d'après les peintures originales et les marbres de la galerie de Lucien Bonapartes (1812), can be found at RCIN 850794.
The painting is one of a number reproducing a composition traditionally known as the Madonna del Velo, the original version of which (currently untraced) is thought to have been painted by Raphael’s workshop after a design by the master dating c.1510-12 (see Bibliographic References).Provenance
