After Raphael (1483-1520)
The Virgin and Child c.1853-76
-
A photograph of a pen and ink sketch now in the Devonshire Collection, Chatsworth House (inv. no.726a).
Ruland (1876) attributed the drawing to Raphael and connected it with the so-called Tempi Madonna (1507-08), a painting now in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (inv. no.WA 796). The drawing is now thought to be a copy possibly after a lost study by Raphael. Its authorship is a matter of debate, with attributions ranging from Perino del Vaga (Sonnenburg 1983) to Cambiaso or Bandinelli (Jaffé 1994). See Bibliographic References for further discussion and RCIN 850719 for a photograph of the painting.
