Ruland (1876) attributed the painting to Perugino and described it as being then in the church of Sant'Agostino, Perugia. The painting recalls the central panel of Raphael's so-called Colonna Altarpiece now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (see RCIN 850667 for a photograph of the painting.
