After a work attributed to Berto di Giovanni (d. 1529)
The Virgin and Child with a Pomegranate c.1860-1876
-
A photograph of a pen and ink drawing formerly attributed to Raphael which Ruland (1876) catalogued as being then in the possession of the late Don J. Madrazo, Madrid. Currently attributed to Berto di Giovanni, the drawing is almost identical to Raphael’s underdrawing of the Conestabile Madonna (c.1503-04; Hermitage, inv. no.GS 252) and could therefore be considered as a copy after Raphael’s original design or cartoon for the painting. See RCIN 850645 for a photograph of the Hermitage painting.
Showing the half length standing figure of the Virgin, supporting the Christ Child with her left hand and holding a pomegranate in her right.Provenance
