Masselli, Giovanni
The Last Supper dated 1818
-
An engraving with etching depicting The Last Supper that Ruland (1876) catalogued as being after a painting in the Hermitage, St Petersburg. This print is signed and dated by the printmaker with publication details and attribution of the design to Raphael. Lettered with the title.
This print is clearly inspired by an engraving by Marco Dente da Ravenna. See RCIN 850434 for the print by Marco Dente and RCIN 850433 for an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi of the same subject.
A drawing now in the Royal Library, Windsor (RCIN 912745) is considered to be the modello for the print by Marco Dente and the one by Raimondi, although scholars do not agree which print has been executed earlier than the other. The heavily damaged condition of the drawing has occasioned a degree of scholarly disagreement about its authorship; ultraviolet photography reveals some of the now lost strength and vitality of the draughtsmanship.
