An engraving reproducing a painting now in the National Gallery, London (inv. no. NG 1032), where it is attributed to Giovanni di Pietro, known as Lo Spagna, and dated c.1500-1505. For a photograph of the painting, see RCIN 850233. This print is lettered with the title, production details and the attribution of the painting to Raphael. Numbered: "Tab. X".
This painting was traditionally thought to be by Raphael, but it has been recently attributed to Lo Spagna or a follower of Pietro Perugino. Four cartoon fragments, preparatory for this painting, by Lo Spagna are now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. 410E; see RCIN 850236 for a photograph of these). The painting is based on the Agony in the Garden, executed by Perugino for the church of San Giusto, Florence, and now in the Uffizi. See Bibliographic References for further information.Provenance
