A hat which was made in South America. Its exterior is overlaid with feathers in a design of birds and flowers. Some feathers are fixed with wire stems around the brim and cut and coloured to look like flowers. The hat has a pink silk lining.
Provenance
Given to Queen Victoria. This may be the 'Brazilian hat made of feathers' which the queen received on her 17th birthday 'from good Mrs. Louis' (Journal, 24th May 1836). Displayed in the Swiss Cottage Museum at Osborne House where it was described in the 1904 Inventory as 'Hat of birds' feathers from South America' (p.27).
