Description

Gilded and painted Burmese stringed instrument (tayaw); with a carved gilded bird sitting on the top of the neck. It rests on stand carved to look like a snake. The bow is also gilded and painted and strung with hair.

Provenance

Probably presented to Queen Victoria as part of a group of 'six musical instruments and stands in the form of boats &c.' by the residents of 'Margai', Burma, on her Golden Jubilee, 1887 (RCINs 83879-83883). The instruments were subsequently displayed at the Exhibition of Jubilee Presents at Bethnal Green in 1888 (no.718).
