A Nigerian carved bust of Queen Victoria, in a light coloured soft wood (funtumia species?), on a black wooden plinth. A similar sculpture is in the Pitt Rivers Museum, made in Lagos, Nigeria, by the Yoruba people.
This carving was likely based on a Golden Jubilee photograph of Queen Victoria, copies of which were widely disseminated across the British sphere of influence in West Africa in 1887. The photographs were displayed in the offices of British administrators and given as gifts to local rulers. The enlargement of the head and the youthful face are typical of Yoruba carving, intended to indicate the serenity and wisdom of the subject.Provenance
Presented to Queen Victoria by Colonel Henry McCullum (1852-1919), Governor of the British Lagos Colony, in 1897.
Displayed in the Swiss Cottage Museum at Osborne House, where it was recorded in the 1904 inventory as 'a crude native bust of Queen Victoria from Lagos' (p.113). -
