The Virgin seated to R, reading, face turned to the angel, who flies in from the L, LH raised with lily, RH extended; the Holy Dove in rays of light above. Die to L with initial B. Good imp. of 1st state, before address of Lafreri.

Previously in the collection of Sir Mark Masterman Sykes; purchased at his sale (1824) by William Esdaile (Lugt 2617; inscribed on verso: '1824 WE Sr M M Sykes's sale N 320'). Purchased for the Royal Collection at Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodges, 11 December 1878, lot 435, for £5.
