Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (1609-64)
The Raising of Lazarus c. 1645-50
Etching | 22.7 x 31.8 cm (platemark) | RCIN 830451
-
An etching of a nocturnal scene of figures craning over the low walls of a tomb as they watch Lazarus coming to life at the call of Jesus, who stands on the right with his right arm raised. Inscribed in the margin, lower right; GB CASTILIONE GENOVESE - P. The smoking torch of the onlookers is outshone by the glory emanating from Christ, but the most dramatic light is the faintest – the dim aura that glows around the outstretched hands of Lazarus as life starts to suffuse his cold body.
Provenance
Probably Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice; from whom purchased by George III, 1762
