A hand-coloured plate of a satire on the illicit practice of selling of army commissions by Mary Anne Clarke, the mistress of Prince Frederick, Duke of York. On the left, the Duke stands, dressed as a conjurer, waving a wand marked 'petticoat Influence' over the emerging figure of Samuel Carter, footman to Mrs Clarke, who is transformed into a Captain in the Army. Carter remarks 'Bless me how soon a foot-boy is turned to a Gentleman.'
