An uncoloured print of a scene set at a village tavern in which undertakers are revelling. The proprietor of the tavern is Robert Death whose name appears on the outside of the tavern. A party of undertakers sit outside smoking 'churchwarden' clay pipes whilst another group enjoy a picnic unawares that a carriage is toppling to one side in the background. Verse under the design reads: 'O stop not here ye Sottish Wights, for Purl nor Ale nor Gin, for if you stop , whoe'er alights by Death is taken in. Where having eat and drank your fill, shoud ye O hapless case, Neglect to pay your Landlords bill, Death stares you in the face, with Grief sincere. I pity those who've drawn themselves this scrape in since from his dreadful gripe Heaven knows. Alas! there's no escaping. This one advice my friends pursue whilst you have life and breath. Ne'er pledge your host for if you do you'll surely-Drink to DEATH' Inscribed in the plate: John Nixon Esq delin / Rowlandson sculp / Pubd 15 Jan 1801 by R Ackermann 101 Strand
