  • A volume of 54 etchings by Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, King of Portugal and mutual cousin of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

The volume was compiled by Queen Victoria and also includes 8 photographs of drawings by Ferdinand. See RCINs 2513922-2513929 for the photographs. The watermark on the first page bears the date 1839 and the same page has been inscribed by the Queen with her monogram and the title: "Collection of etchings done by Ferdinand King of Portugal 1840". The etchings inside the volume date from 1837 to 1848; the majority of the photographs is of later drawings, which are dated 1837, 1857 and 1858. The majority of the etchings is of Ferdinand's own invention, while some of them are inscribed as taken after paintings or drawings by contemporary artists.

Ferdinand was a prolific royal artist and the Royal Collection holds a very good group of etchings by him. For other works by Ferdinand, see RCINs 809365 (a volume of 84 etchings), 814411-814427, 922665-922666, 816801-816802 , 917037, 933134-933135, 922616, 929552 and 812766. In her journal entry of 24 March 1836, Princess Victoria describes how she "Copied some of Ferdinand's drawings while Lehzen read to me". The Royal Collection holds five drawings made by Queen Victoria, when Princess Victoria of Kent, after works by Ferdinand: see RCIN 980017.

Most of the etchings also have a caption - possibly written by Queen Victoria herself - at the bottom of the sheets. Some of the etchings have inscriptions in pencil that appear to have been written by Ferdinand (see RCINs 809356.aj-ak); some of them have been erased, possibly by Queen Victoria herself, in the process of copying the inscriptions, in ink, as captions onto the volume page below the prints. In some cases, it appears that the Queen copied the same inscription that Ferdinand wrote (see RCIN 809356.a), while in others the erased words do not seem to correspond with the final inscriptions (see RCIN 809356.e).

In her journal, the young Princess Victoria wrote on Friday 5th of May 1837: "Received a very nice kind little letter from the Queen of Portugal, and some very pretty etchings done by dear Ferdinand", probably referring to the earlier etchings of this volume.
