A chromolithograph illustrating a view of Sainte Chapelle in Paris. Lettered with 'France en miniature' above the image, and the title and production details underneath. Annotated on the album sheet: Aug: 20-.
In August 1855 Queen Victoria and Prince Albert spent ten days in Paris, on the invitation of Napoleon III and his wife Eugénie. The historic state visit was intended to celebrate the military alliance between Britain and France in the Crimean War, and followed a visit by the imperial couple to Windsor in April that year.
Victoria and Albert visited the royal chapel in company with the Emperor on 20 August. The Queen wrote in her journal that she thought the monument had been "most exquisitely restored" and was of "the purest early Gothic architecture."
Back in England, Victoria and Albert compiled an album of prints (including this work) and photographs relating to their travels.Provenance
In an album compiled by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert; Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn; by whom the album was given to Queen Mary; Royal Collection after 1935
