Hollar's etching of Windsor Castle is divided into an upper view 'Prospect of the Castle from the S.E.', depicted from the park with the river Thames in the background, and a lower bird's eye view from above the Watch Tower in the south east corner, lettered 'WINDSOR CASTLE' above a key in two columns. The print was created for Elias Ashmole for his book 'The institutions, laws and ceremonies of the noble Order of the Garter', published in 1672. Hollar visited Windsor with Ashmole in 1659, who recorded 'May 24, 1659 I went to Windsor and took Mr Hollar with me to take views of the castle'.
Second state of two. There is a related drawing to the upper view, RCIN 913262. -
