Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-77)
The Coronation of King Charles the II in Westminster Abbey the 23 of April 1661 1662
-
An etching of the interior of Westminster Abbey, including the tapestries which lined the walls, the display of plate on the altar, and the banks of spectators who filled the transepts. In the centre Charles II appears twice, at the moment of the crowning, and afterwards seated on a raised platform, wearing a crown for all to see. The king was then presented by the archbishop to the congregation, who loudly pledged their loyalty.
For the illustration of John Ogilby's Entertainment of His Most Excellent Majestie, Wenceslaus Hollar was commissioned to provide six new plates showing the coronation procession and the ceremony in Westminster Abbey.
