Dark-mouthed tibia (Tibia fusus melanocheilus Adams) c.1645
Etching | 9.5 x 14.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 804569
-
An etching of a dark-mouthed tibia shell. Pennington had this simply as Tibia fusus Linnaeus, 1758; the colouration and shorter syphonal canal indicates the dark-mouthed tibia, Tibia fusus melanocheilus Adams, 1854 [Strombidae, A&D p. 82]. Bangladesh to China Sea, to 165mm. Copied in Buonanni, 2.III.121, inverted and reversed, shaded differently and with the addition of a shadow. This in turn was copied (reversed) in Lister IV.14.1, with the shadow omitted.
See general notes on 804563.Provenance
Probably acquired during the seventeenth or eighteenth century.
