A half-length portrait of Al-Rashid Ben Ali Al-Charif, known as Mulai Al-Rashid and called ‘Taffeleta’ by the English – a name drawn from the region in Morocco controlled by his family. A member of the Alaouite dynasty, Al-Rashid was the Sultan of Morocco from 1666–1672. Al-Rashid expanded Alaouite control throughout the entirety of Morocco, capturing northern regions of the country.
The print was used as an illustration to John Ogilby’s Africa (1670, p.159). An earlier state of the print was likely created as a portrait of Al-Rashid during Hollar’s 1669 visit to Tangier (see the National Gallery of Prague, inv. no. R 117853). Hollar travelled to Tangier as a Royal Scenographer, accompanying a British diplomatic mission sent to establish peace and trade with Al-Rashid.
