An etching of the interior of St. George's Hall, Windsor showing a Garter feast during the reign of Charles II. The king is depicted on throne on a platform at the end of the hall. The Knights of the Garter are seated at a long table that runs along the left side of the hall. The wall behind the Knights is hung with tapestries. Along the right wall, below the windows, are serving tables. Heralds standing in pairs form a line at centre left, Pensioners are depicted beside them carrying plates with the second course. This impression is the second of two states which bears the inscription at upper centre: The Prospect of the inside of / S.[t] GEORGES HALL.
This etching appeared as an illustration on p.593 of Elias Ashmole's The Institution, Laws & Ceremonies of the most Noble Order of the Garter. Collected and digested into one Body by Elias Ashmole of the Middle-Temple Esq; Windsor Herald at Arms, A Work furnished with a variety of matter, relating to Honor and Noblesse, London (1672). -
