Engraving | 11.7 x 7.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 800045
-
This engraving shows the Virgin and Child seated on a turf bench in an enclosed garden, beneath a tree. Dürer's AD monogram and the date 1513 are inscribed at top centre. The Virgin, who is dressed in sixteenth-century costume, holds the Christ Child to her cheek, while he gazes out at the viewer. In the background beyond the garden can be see a stretch of water and distant hills. This is one of a number of prints and drawings in which Dürer presents the Virgin and Child in a hortus conclusus or enclosed garden, an image used to symbolise the Mother of God in the Song of Songs. These prints had a wide circulation: a manuscript in the Royal Collection (RCIN 1005069) shows that this engraving was known to a Mughal artist by around 1600.
