This mezzotint was published in 1858 after a painting by Jerry Barrett, titled 'Queen Victoria's First Visit to her Wounded Soldiers' (1856). The visit of Queen Victoria and the royal family actually took place on 3 March 1855, when the Queen visited wounded soldiers in the Brompton Hospital, Chatham. Barrett witnessed the event and produced the painting from sketches made on the spot. The painting was later exhibited by Agnew's in Manchester and London. Agnew's also commissioned the mezzotint from Thomas Oldham Barlow. -
