In Britain the condition of the troops in the Crimea became a major issue. For the first time newspapers sent reporters to cover the war, who reported that thousands more were dying of disease than from military action and that the hospitals were not equipped to deal with the many sick and wounded they were receiving. Popular prints such as The Wounded Soldier’s Dream illustrated the public’s concern for the welfare of the soldiers. In this print the wounded soldier dreams of receiving a medal from Queen Victoria.
