A young girl's full length white cotton machine lace overdress, the lace in a Chantilly pattern, with mid-length princess sleeves with bands of tulle threaded with gold, and a single tucker to the neckline, decorated with a series of gold fabric bows evenly spaced down the front of the dress with a gold fabric belt at waistline, and lined with a white satin under dress.
Provenance
Worn by Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II, to the coronation of her father, King George VI at Westminster Abbey, 12 May 1937.
Following the Coronation the Robes of the King and Queen and the two Princesses were displayed at the Royal School of Needlework in South Kensington 19 May - 17 July (Queen Elizabeth visiting the exhibition on 22 June). It is not clear whether the Princess's dresses and robes subsequently toured to Edinburgh and Australia with the adult Robes.
Sent on loan to the Museum of London, 1952, and later returned. -
